10. Four Twenty South

About Four Twenty South

Four Twenty South is named for its latitude – it is almost exactly 4 degrees and 20 minutes south of the equator – and the Martin family used these bearings to find the property in the days when the area was forest and the beach was dotted with Big Cat pug marks . The business has been run by the family since 1966, and is now run by Hilary Martin who took it over from her parents in 2007.

MY REVIEW

Best beach on the south coast, Own private chef and own private cleaner and personally the best piece of beach on the whole South Coast. But very dirty especially the kitchen as there was dirt every where, the oven was all rusty as was very old, the toilet had stains around the sides from, well you can guess.

Privacy was a problem as all the staff are extremely nice and friendly but don't quite understand privacy, as you would wake up to find that the cleaner and chef would have let then selves in to the house without permission and then the chef would come round a lot during the day and just come and sit at the table and start talking to us out of the blue.

Also we where situated right next to the main house which meant we had staff all eating just to the side of our house getting together and talking which wasn't too nice when wanting some piece and quiet. But I think one of the main reasons Its got the bottom ranking as it was not at all good for self catering as advertised as most the things you need to cook a meal weren't there.

MAIN PROBLEMS IN QUICK

  • Privacy
  • Not self catering
  • Cleanness

Please note on website very nice pictures and all looks very clean and private. Pictures can be deceiving.

House we stayed in: Notice just to the left of this picture is the staff house where they all live ( But of course it doesn't show you this.

Take a good look at this picture you will notice the window that is open. The wood varnish from the shutter is slowly peeling away giving it that grayish colour.

9. Mombasa beach hotel

About Mombasa Beach Hotel

The Mombasa Beach Hotel, with 150 rooms, plus 6 VIP suites – all air conditioned – is one of the largest and most modern hotels in the African Tours and Hotels chain. It overlooks a splendid Indian Ocean beach, yet lies only minutes away from the centre of Mombasa. Mombasa Beach Hotel provides “round-the-clock” service and has all the attractions of a seaside resort, including tennis, sailing, wind-surfing, water slide, snorkeling and other water sports. Trips out to the reef with its magnificent underwater vistas can also be arranged. With the opening of the conference centre, the hotel provides a wide variety of meeting rooms which are able to accommodate up to 200 people in theatre style.

I have never stayed at this hotel but the feed back I get from it is not sounding at all good. One of my best friends stayed here and I asked him to write a review. Here it is.

Friends Review

It was the original International Style hotel in Mombassa, built in 1970 and apart from a lick of
paint I don't think anything has been done to it since. In our original room the taps would not
turn off, they were unmarked so you could not tell hot from cold, but it did not matter because
they both produced the same temperature, an electrical socket was upside down, the phone
socket was hanging by the wiring and not fixed to the wall, the electric shaver point did not
work.

Worst of all the much vaunted airconditioning did not work either. It could be turned
on and was very noisy but made no difference to the temperature. The only way to get cool at
night was to have the balcony and landing doors open to get breeze, not something to be recommended
as there were monlkeys about. I spoke to a maintence man and he confirmed the only work they did
was repair and make do as cheaply as possible.

The food was pretty abysmal too, served buffet style with tables set around a bare open courtyard
and the buffet over the other side.

The place was only 20% full, and this was the high season.

MAIN PROBLEMS IN QUICK

  • Temperature (water and air)
  • maintenance
  • Food
